Star Wars:The Last Jedi

Oh my gosh! The new Star Wars movie has officially been titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi! How epic is that?! Naturally, as fans, we start to speculate what could the title tell us about the next movie in the Skywalker Saga. Well,  I am here to tell you, like millions of other people in the world, I have no idea. However, what I can do is speculate and put forth theories.

Theory #1: This movie will make a lot of money. I know that it isn’t exactly a theory about the plot of the movie, but it’s a theory nonetheless. Do I think that this will be as profitable as the Force Awakens? I will revert to my economist answer and say it depends. Not to go too deep on this theory, you’re welcome, in large part Force Awakens was able to cash in on nostalgia. The selling point was essentially:”Come see the new Star Wars It’ll be interesting to see if the new wave of characters/ Carrie Fisher’s death can carry this movie. It seems like the nostalgia factor is partially gone, we’ve already gotten two great Star Wars movies in the last two years, and fan favorite Han Solo is no longer with us, God rest his soul.

Theory #2: Leia dies. This shouldn’t be too much of a shocker, seeing that Fisher is already gone, but could it be that Leia was a Jedi? Given her family tree and the fact that Luke did try to usher in a new era of Jedi, it wouldn’t be too much of a shocker. Also, Yoda did say that there was still another “hope” to defeat the Empire at the end of Empire Strikes Back. If Leia is a Jedi and dies, then the title not only makes perfect sense, but it is also a nice farewell to our beloved Princess/General Leia.

Theory #3: Luke kicks the can. If Luke dies then someone else has to be a Jedi, right? Yes and No. Regardless of Rey’s relationship to Luke, Obi Wan, or whoever else is rumored to be her father, it’s obvious that she is the leader of the pack for the new set of heroes. Thus, she gets her training from Luke and Luke dies and she’s the last Jedi. I think this seems more likely than anything to be case, but maybe Disney will surprise us and do away with the Sith and Jedi feud by killing of Luke.Maybe Kylo Ren not being a sith and Rey not being a Jedi will further separate the new wave of movies from the old set of movies. Regardless of what happens, I know I will be at the first showing in December.
